  • Triangle Park: This park has a historical marker regarding the 1776 Escalante-Dominguez Expedition that once passed through the Dove Creek area. This tiny sliver of a park is extremely easy to miss even though it’s located on Highway 491 within a few hundred feet of the motel. The spot is so small that most people don’t even realize it’s a park or that the location has any significance. Look for the flagpole and the Point of Interest sign by a patch of trees on the north side of the highway adjacent to Guyrene Street.

  • Weber Park: Almost directly behind the motel is the intersection of West 5th Street and Bob Street. Heading north on Bob Street, the road will turn east and become West 7th Street, which then passes by the local school athletic fields (track, football, baseball) as well as Weber Park. The park has an area for children to play, a tennis court, and basketball hoops. When the Pick ‘n Hoe celebration takes place every 4th of July, Weber Park is the official center of activity.

Pick ‘n Hoe Celebration

Held every year for a few days around the 4th of July, the locals commemorate the long tradition of Dove-Creek-area mining and farming with the Pick ‘n Hoe Celebration. Most activities take place at Weber Park and include contests for kids and adults, many related to the mining and farming theme of the celebration. Spectators can stay reasonably clean, but competitors should expect to get a bit grimy in some contests. Evenings are usually filled with music, including some live performances and an outdoor dance. For a single day only—the 4th of July—a cook shack serves tasty, pit-cooked barbecue at a reasonable price, and then a town fireworks display takes place in the evening.
